This spring, we’re excited to bring a variety of programs and activities to the Brookline community in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) National Public Health Week! We’re offering community members opportunities to engage in meaningful public health activities that promote health and wellness. We hope you will join us!

Public Health Carnival
Brookline High School - Freshman Building, 22 Tappan Street
3:30 – 6:30 PM
Kick off National Public Health Week with a fun-filled Public Health Carnival on Monday, April 7, from 3:30 – 6:30 PM at 22 Tappan Street!

Enjoy exciting activities, including:

  • Rat Races (a bounce house obstacle course)
  • Catch the Flu Cornhole
  • Face Painting
  • Ready, Set, Go Bag!
  • "Be the Beat" Hands-only CPR (The Heart Beat Project)
  • Blurred Lines Substance Use Challenge

Explore important public health topics, including behavioral health, food safety, and extreme heat safety. Don't miss a special screening showcasing a day in the life of public health staff.

Chat with our Peer Leaders about their poster campaigns, funded by The 84 Movement, promoting healthy behaviors and prevention strategies.

Meet the Norfolk County DA’s therapy dog and learn how you can foster dogs.

Grab a popcorn or cotton candy from the concession stand. Complete our scavenger hunt for a chance to win a raffle prize and enjoy a free ice cream from Trombetta’s!

Exploring Our Backyard 2: Muddy River Stroll
Outdoor Patio at Punch Bowl, 700 Brookline Ave.

Join the Friends of Brookline Public Health for Exploring Our Backyard 2 on Tuesday, April 8 at noon for a guided walk along the Muddy River. Meet us promptly at 12:00 PM at Punch Bowl outdoor patio (700 Brookline Ave, Hilton Garden – Boylston St side).

Led by local guides, this walk through the landscape designed by Frederick Law Olmstead will highlight Brookline’s local conservation efforts, wildlife, trees, and plants. We’ll explore the Muddy River near Leverett Pond, learning about the natural beauty our town has to offer.

The walk will conclude back at Punch Bowl's outdoor patio, where the Friends of Brookline Public Health will provide a light snack for participants.

Note: The event will be canceled in case of inclement weather.

High Stakes for Public Health in 2025: Brookline Responds

The Friends of Brookline Public Health invite you to their Annual Meeting on Wednesday, April 9, from 6:30 – 8:00 PM at BHS Freshman Building (22 Tappan Street).

The Friends will honor outstanding individuals and organizations by awarding the Alan Balsam Public Health Leadership Award, the Herb Carlin Community Health Award, and the inaugural Public Health Equity Award. This will be followed by a timely and thought-provoking panel discussion on the future of public health and a presentation of Brookline's Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) as a response to emerging challenges.

Panelists will include Nicole Huberfeld, JD, Edward R. Utley Professor of Health Law, BU Schools of Law and Public Health and Sigalle Reiss, MPH, REHS/RS, Director of Brookline Public Health & Human Services, and John Kleschinsky, Assistant Director of Policy and Programming, Brookline Public Health & Human Services. The discussion will be moderated by Chris Chanyasulkit, PhD, MPH, Past President of APHA, with an opportunity for audience Q&A. Register to attend.
