Brookline Thrives Welcomes You Back

Brookline Thrives

From Sharon Brockmann, Brookline Thrives Manager:

Welcome to the 2023/24 Brookline Thrives school year. Like last year, I am truly humbled by all the committed volunteers who return to Thrives year after year. For me it is like falling back into some kind of family reunion. Thank you for returning! If it’s your first time volunteering with Brookline Thrives, welcome! Our volunteer shifts begin Wednesday, September 13th!

Here's a list of all our volunteer opportunities, with brief descriptions. If you would like more information or have questions about any role, please feel free to email thrives@brooklinefoodpantry.org or call me directly at 617-991-7943. The most important shift we need cover for is securing UHaul drivers for deliveries.

*** WE NEED UHAUL DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS ***

  • PAID POSITION - SCHOOL DELIVERIES - UHAUL DRIVER - Thrives uses a 10' UHaul truck to deliver our bins to schools and community locations. This shift involves picking up the truck at UHaul on Route 9 (next to the Audi dealership), driving to 218 to load the truck, delivering bins to participating schools and community locations, picking up inventory, and returning to 218 to unload inventory. There are two shifts to choose from, 8:30-11:30am and 12:30-3:30pm. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver's license, and be able to lift at least 30 lbs.
  • SCHOOL DELIVERIES - PASSENGER - Ride in the UHaul truck, assisting with school deliveries. This shift involves meeting 218 to load the truck, delivering bins to participating schools and community locations, picking up inventory, returning to 218 to unload inventory and empty bins. There are two shifts to choose from, 8:30-11:30am and 12:30-3:30pm. Volunteers must be able to lift at least 30 lbs.
  • BAG PACKING - Pack Thrives bags readying them for delivery to schools.
  • INVENTORY UNLOAD - Unload our truck and put away inventory into 218. Light lifting is required.
  • BAG DISTRIBUTION (various locations) - We have an open spot at Heath school. If you are interested in helping at any of the other K-8 schools, the volunteers will train you. Bag distribution occurs on:
    • Thursday afternoons from 3-3:30pm at Baker, Driscoll, FRR. Lawrence, Pierce and Runkle
    • Friday mornings from 7-7:30am at Driscoll and Lincoln
    • Friday afternoons at our community pickup locations:
      • 4:45-6:15pm at 226 High Street
      • 5-6:30pm at 55R Egmont Street
  • SUBSTITUTES - If a desired shift is full, please consider signing up as a sub. Substitutes should only report to a shift if contacted.
  • MASKS ARE NO LONGER REQUIRED while volunteering at Thrives, however masks are welcomed for those who prefer to wear them.
  • The minimum age requirement for most volunteer shifts is 15 years old. The only exception to this is Bag Packing Shifts where volunteers between the ages of 12-14 years are allowed when accompanied by a parent or responsible adult who is volunteering at the same time.
  • Any volunteer under the age of 18 must complete a waiver with parental/caregiver consent. A waiver will be provided.
  • In-School volunteers (those involved with school deliveries and school bag distribution) must have a valid CORI on file with the school district. Schools will assist Thrives with processing CORIs.
  • Only people who have signed up for a volunteer shift may attend that shift. We do not allow walk-ins.

Please feel free to share with anyone you think may be interested in helping Brookline Thrives. You do not need to live in Brookline or have students in the Public Schools of Brookline to get involved.

I look forward to seeing you at a shift soon, thank you!
Sharon
