Brookline Thrives Updates & Needs, Week of June 12 - 16, 2023

We did it! This is the last week of packing, delivering, and Thrives Bag distribution for the 2022-2023 school year! Many of you have been asking how children can access breakfast and lunch items over the summer months during the Thrives hiatus. I'm happy to report that the PSB Food Services Department's "Summer Eats" program offers FREE breakfasts and lunches to all families who might benefit from it throughout July and August. Read the article later in this email to find out more about "Summer Eats."

SUMMER EATS PROGRAM JULY - AUGUST

The SUMMER EATS PROGRAM provides FREE breakfast and lunch items, Monday through Fridays to Brookline Public School families over the months of July and August.

The PSB Food Services Department (along with many community partners including Brookline Thrives and two of our Thrives volunteers) will host a Summer Meals Food Tasting Event at the Brookline Avenue Playground (575 Brookline Ave) on Thursday, July 6, from 3-5pm to kick off the Summer Meal Program. This free, interactive event features food tastings, music, activities, and giveaways. This year, families and kids can help the department select products and food items for their menu next year. Kids can provide feedback on menu items by voting for things they want to see on future school menus.

FOOD FOR FREE SCHOOL MARKETS

Did you know one in three households in MA had at least one child that experienced food insecurity in 2022 according to a newly published report by the Greater Boston Food Bank. Food For Free partnered with 11 schools across Cambridge and Somerville to host monthly markets for the school families and members of the community to access free food, right where they are. These pop-up pantries offered the choice of several pantry staples, produce, and other fresh foods.
