Brookline Thrives Updates & Needs, Week of April 24-28, 2023

We hope you all enjoyed the vacation week. Perhaps many of you were out cheering the marathon runners last Monday.
If you can believe it there are only nine weeks left of Thrives before the schools end for the summer! We have a few open spots this week:

Please check out the signup for May through June for more volunteer opportunities.
If you are new to Thrives, please be sure to read the requirements at the top of the Signup Genius page. Anyone under the age of 18 must complete a waiver. And any volunteer between the ages of 12-14 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Reminder, volunteers ages 12-14 are allowed for Bag Packing shifts only. For all other volunteer opportunities, individuals must be at least 15 years old.
Project Bread's Walk for Hunger
Sunday, May 7th! 2 Weeks To Go!
We hope to see many of our Brookline Thrives community at this event on Boston Common!
The Brookline Food Pantry is teaming up with the Friends of Brookline Public Health to organize a team for the 2023 Walk For Hunger. This year's walk consists of a 5K walk around Boston Common; and proceeds from the team will go to the Food Pantry, specifically to Brookline Thrives! House FY24 Budget Proposal Includes Permanent School Meals for All
On Wednesday, April 12th the Massachusetts House Ways & Means Committee released their proposal for 2024 Fiscal Year, and it includes making School Meals for All permanent in Massachusetts. The House will vote on this proposal and then it will move over to the Senate where the process will repeat itself in May before heading to the Governor’s desk in late June/early July.
In addition to universal school meals, the budget also included:
- $600,000 for the FoodSource Hotline to better support individuals and families seeking food assistance and connect more eligible households to federal nutrition programs.
- $700,000 for the Child Nutrition Outreach Program to support schools and community programs to better serve children by increasing access to school and summer meals.
- An additional $5 million for the Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) to boost the purchasing power of households receiving SNAP benefits to buy local fruits and vegetables.
