Eliminate Plastic Water Bottles from Brookline Public School

10/28/2023 6:08 pm

The Brookline Public Schools are each designed to have several water fountains readily accessible, and Massachusetts has some of the best tap water in the country, yet plastic water bottles are sold in vending machines, given out at teacher meetings and events, and are distributed in schools’ cafeterias. The town of Brookline is sharing their values with youth when they distribute plastic water bottles in the schools. They are endorsing and encouraging the consumption of single use plastics. Besides being an unnecessary investment of our money, plastic bottles, typically made out of polyethylene terephthalate, take 400 years to decompose naturally. Many plastic bottles don’t decompose naturally, ending up in oceans or landfills, eliminating the possibility of degradation. When we drink from plastic bottles, we ingest hundreds of microplastics into our bodies. Fighting the Plastic Revolution is a global problem, but our goal is to start small in our Brookline community. We hope to eliminate plastic water bottles from the BHS community by signing our petition. Eliminating plastic water bottles from BHS is not only much better for the environment but is better for our health.

10/14/2023 11:18 am

Studies show that children who have frequent and open conversations about sexuality with their parents are more likely to make informed, healthy, and responsible decisions about relationships. Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts’ acclaimed “Let’s Be Honest” is an interactive presentation designed to help parents and caregivers create an environment of trust and comfort in talking about relationships and sexuality. Positive communication helps establish values, enabling young people to make healthier, better-informed decisions related to sexuality. By providing parents with useful skills, information, and resources, this lively and refreshingly direct program can empower parents to feel competent and successful as their children’s primary sexuality educators.
